The Master Detective is the player character of the Mystery Case Files series. Not much specific information is known about them, as their face is never shown, however it is assumed that the Master Detective is female. In Fate's Carnival Collector's Edition, the collectible bobblehead of the Master Detective was male, suggesting the detective is a male; however, when the Master Detective is talking to the queen through the use of a phone booth at the end of Madame Fate, a woman's voice is heard from inside the phone booth, which strongly indicates that the detective is female. With the release of Mystery Case Files: Dire Grove Sacred Grove, you choose which gender the Master Detective is.

In Mystery Case Files: Moths to a Flame, a woman's voice can be heard coming from the Master Detective, further implying that the detective is a female. However, further in the game, it was explained by the Archivist that the Master Detective was a male: one was mentioned in a cassette tape and the other in the bonus chapter (however, it is possible that the Archivist didn't truly know the detective's gender and only assumed that the detective was a male, but this is unlikely). In Mystery Case Files: The Last Resort, a man's voice is heard after the detective falls down a shift, which further suggests that the detective is male. Yet, in Mystery Case Files: 13th Skull, the journal entry upon entering the town reads “This rustic River community is comprised of little more than a gas station, a voodoo shop, and a sleazy dive bar called the Drink and Swaller. With the two former closed I’ll take my chances in the tavern—somebody must know more about the situation. Lucky with me, it’s ladies night.” This implies further that the Master Detective is female. Even further proof that the Master Detective is female is shown in Mystery Case Files: The Dalimar Legacy where an image of the detective is shown briefly with long hair, which appears to be a woman's hair.

Appearance[]

The Master Detective typically wears a black fedora, a long black overcoat or trenchcoat, with black gloves and boots.

Early Life[]

The Master Detective was revealed to have known Lady Eleanor Codington (a missing woman from The Countess) long before she joined the Royal Agency, and has kept in touch with her frequently. It was also revealed in Key to Ravenhearst that her father is a bit of a dandy, and thus leaves his mustache comb close by. In Huntsville, it was revealed that she was only an intern when she was asked to lead the team to solve the cases there, but the executives insisted that she had uncommon potential. She was awarded the key to the city along with the title of Master Detective. She was also named as an honorary agent of the FBI after finding the Hope Diamond in Mystery Case Files: Prime Suspects.
